Samsung QN55Q7F vs UN55KS9000 Performance

Picture Quality

Picture quality is the one of the main advantage that offered by both of Samsung QN55Q7F and UN55KS9000. Both of them equally offer stunning picture quality in HDR or SDR quality. Nevertheless, as a newer model, QN55Q7F certainly comes with some additional technologies and upgraded technologies that make its performance should be better.  But, is that right?

Started from color performance, it is one of the advantages of Samsung QN55A7F than UN55KS9000. Although both of them are already powered by quantum dot technology, but with some improvements on this technology, QN55Q7F offers wider color gamut than UN55KS9000. As the note, Samsung UN55KS9000 can deliver about 95 % of DCI P3 color space, while QN55Q7F with new quantum dot technology can deliver nearly perfect DCI P3 Color coverage that is about 99% of DCI P3 color space. This means color coverage of QN55Q7F is wider that makes the color of picture that displayed on the screen looks slight saturated than UN55KS9000. While in term of color coverage, QN55Q7F offers better performance, in term of color gradient when they are inputted by 10 bit depth of color like HDR signals, UN55KS9000 precisely offers a bit better performance. On the screen of QN55Q7F, some imperfections is still slightly noticeable in the most of darker color while on the screen of UN55KS9000, the imperfections is only visible on darker read band. Nevertheless, overall color gradient that offered by them is nearly perfectly and this should not be a problem for most people.

Moving on black level and contrast, Samsung UN55KS9000 as an older model precisely offers slight deeper black level and slight stronger contrast than QN55Q7F. Nevertheless, what offered by QN55Q7F is already great. As the note, Samsung QN55Q7Freach about 0.02 of black level with native contrast ratio around 5000:1 while UN55KS9000 offers slight better, that is around 0,0.14 nits of black levels with native contrast ratio about 6800:1. Nevertheless, for untrained eyes, this difference should not be too noticeable. Black level reached by them is also darker than minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 contents that is about 0.05 nits. This means when they are displaying HDR 10 contents, there should not be issues on black level and contrast. With deep black level and strong contrast and also good dark uniformity offered by them, this makes both of them are good TVs when used in a dark room. Detail of picture in a dark scenes will looks clearly on each of their screen, especially when they are displaying HDR contents. Additionally, color also looks very saturated.

In term of peak brightness, Samsung UN55KS9000 as an older model precisely is superior to QN55Q7F. You need to know, peak brightness reached by UN55KS9000 is about 1500 nits and it is even including the brightest TVs in 2016. Meanwhile, although its peak brightness is still above average, but compared to what reached by UN55KS9000, it is relatively low, even it is still lower than 1000 nits as the minimum recommendations of HDR 10.  This means, when used in a very bright room UN55KS9000 offers better performance than QN55Q7F due it has far brighter picture. Meanwhile, when used in a room with decent light, peak brightness of QN55Q7F is still quite bright, but when used in a very bright room, its peak brightness is not quite enough to drown the glare. Additionally, peak brightness of QN55Q7F is also not quite bright for displaying HDR 10 fully. But considering it looks awkward because Samsung TV is synonymous with very bright TV, we will update this comparison as bright as about the performance of QN55Q7F, especially about its peak brightness.

The other strong point of picture that produced by both of Samsung QN55Q7F and UN55KS9000 is about their UHD Up-scaling Engine. It is very useful especially when you are watching videos from video sources that have lower resolution than 4K. No matter the resolution of the sources, you will enjoy them in near 4K quality sharply and clearly. Even for DVDs with 480p resolution, the final images in 4K that produced also look sharply and clearly. Moreover when the source is higher resolution like 720p or 1080p, of course the final images in 4K that produced is clearer and sharper small details preserved very well.

But unfortunately, when you are watching TV from side viewing angle, the picture that displayed don’t look as amazing as when you are watching from center and front. As we know, poor viewing angle is a native characteristic of VA panel and because both of them use VA Panel, side viewing angle also becomes their major downside. Started at 20 degrees off center and front, picture looks start to deteriorate. This means, watching TV from side viewing angle should be avoided if you don’t want to lose picture quality.

Motion Handling and 24p Playback

Both of Samsung QN55Q7F and UN55KS9000 do a good job when handling motion blur when they are displaying fast moving images like sports program or fast movies. Overall, their performance is above average. Nevertheless, compared between them, QN55Q7F is offers better performance than UN55KS9000. Its pixel response time is lower that makes QN55Q7F offers smoother picture quality. On the screen of UN55KS9000, a faint trail is still slight noticeable following fast moving objects. Meanwhile, on the screen of QN55Q7F, there is only a short trail following the fast moving objects. In other hand, both of Samsung UN55KS9000 and QN55Q7F are also a good TV when used for watching movies. Both of them equally offer judder-free when displaying 24p movies without “Soap Opera Effect”. No matter it is native 24p signal like movies from Blu-Ray Player, 24p via 60i signal like movies from satellite TV, or even 24p movies from streaming media, judder can be removed by setting “Auto Motion Plus” to “Custom” with both “Sliders” set to 0.

Inputs/Outputs

As their major connectivity, both of Samsung QN55Q7F and UN55KS9000 are equally equipped with 4 HDMI Ports and 3 USB Ports. In addition to HDMI and USB ports, there are also Ethernet, Antenna In, Digital Audio Out (optical) and others. But even so, there are no Composite in (AV IN), and Component In, so if you want to connect your devices onto UN55KS9000 or QN55Q7F where AV IN or Component In are their main connectivity, you need a converter. A bit differences between them precisely is about their “one connect box” where “One Connect Box” of QN55Q7F need second power cable and is much larger than UN55KS9000. Additionally, on “One Connect Box” of UN55KS9000, there are All HDMI Ports, USB Ports, and Antenna In are located, while on “One Connect Box” of QN55Q7F, all inputs and outputs ports are installed including Ethernet, and  Digital Audio Out (optical). Meanwhile, talking about the input lags of their HDMI ports, both of them offer low input lags at any sources and of course this is good. This means, both of them are a great TV when used for playing video games, even for fast paced games that needs fast reflexes.

There are VoD apps like YouTube, Netflix, HuluPlus, and others, Web Browsers, Cloud Games Apps, Screen Mirroring, and many more.

Samsung QN55Q7F comes with “Samsung Smart Controller 2017” TM1790A models while UN55KS900 comes with “Samsung Smart Controller 2016” TM1650A models. Basically, they have the same functionality like voice navigations and universal remote where you can use them to control other devices which connected onto TV via HDMI ports. Additionally, both of these remote also comes with minimalist buttons, even there is no “number buttons”.
